Wexford Tomatoes
is a new brand created in 2015 by veteran growers Horeswood Nurseries who were established in 1969; they are one of Ireland’s largest and longest established commercial tomato growers.  Horeswood Nurseries is owned by Matt Wallace, whose family have been growing produce in County Wexford for nearly 50 years, the enterprise is managed by David Griffiths; both Matt and David are specialists in producing consistently high quality Irish produce.

An ambitious, commercially viable enterprise Horeswood Nurseries produce over 1,000 tonnes of produce annually for the main Irish and Ireland based UK multiples (Super Valu, Dunnes Stores, Centra and Tesco).  The company’s facilities in Wexford encompass two hectares of tomatoes under glass, in a state of the art commercial greenhouse unit, with integrated packing and transportation facilities. Horeswood Nurseries employ 10 full time staff and during peak season the team can increase to 20 people.

The Wexford Tomatoes brand was created to highlight the provenance of the tomatoes, to let customers know that these tomatoes are Irish, grown locally in Wexford, creating and supporting Irish jobs and running a sustainable business with a low carbon footprint.

Wexford Tomatoes are committed to making ethically responsible choices and sustainable farming practices in their day to day business. They have made several long-term investments, including a biomass boiler which was installed in 2012. This two megawatt biomass boiler, was a major step in reducing their dependency on fossil fuels, reducing their energy costs and vastly decreasing their carbon emissions. They also have an integrated pest management plan whereby they manage any potential pest issues with the least possible hazard to people and the environment. They are continually looking for new ways to work in harmony with nature. They have received accreditation from Bord Bia (Irish Food Board) and the British Retail Consortium.
